While in Zanzibar I spent many hours walking along the coast watching and studying the lives of the people in the village of Nungwi.
This was not the first time I had seen women cleaning household rugs in the sea but this time I was delighted to see how this teenage girl despite the difficulty of her task, managed to move with such grace and finesse.

My stay on the island of Zanzibar was full of beautiful images, especially when walking on the beach. The children of Nungwi walk, play and live their lives on the coast. Watching them was a pleasure for me and a wonderful source of inspiration for my paintings.

On Zanzibar, better known as the spice island, I spent many hours walking along the coast where I was lucky enough to be able to observe how the children entertained themselves using the objects they found washed up on the shore.
One morning I came across a small boy lying in the algae on the beach. At first I thought he was playing with a stick but when I asked him what he was doing, he explained that he was searching for small fish for his father to use as fishing bait.

While walking along the beach in Zanzibar I came across a group of children playing in the sea, but this one girl in particular caught my attention. At first she had her back to me but as she turned and we looked at each other intensely, her shy but curious expression touched my heart and I knew that I wanted to paint her.
