The morning market of Mopti, Mali
Every time I think about this work my imagination takes me to the morning market of Mopti (Mali), which seems to have been lost in time. Here mothers sell their wares while small children talk or simply stop, look and move on without exchanging words. For me these are magical moments. When I returned home, in the silence of my study I remembered with nostalga the emotions, colours and images from that day and captured them forever on canvas.

After arriving in Segou my heart began to race as I saw the people were making their way home after a day in the local market. As the day drew to a close (as the day was getting dark) and the light began to fade I could just make out the silhouettes of the people and not knowing if I would have the chance to see them again and It was such a beautiful image I wanted to retain it in my mind. The women lifted their skirts as they boarded the boats carrying baskets and barrels full of clothes and bananas in order to cross the Niger river where the majority of the bozos people live. The fishermen and their wives visit the market once a week to exchange fish and other products for vegetables and fruit and were in a hurry to return home!

What I liked most about the women in Mali was their brightly colored cotton clothes. Every day they work in the fields or go to the market to socialize and barter for everyday goods. .While working in the home they are often seen sitting on small wooden stools but always maintain their elegance and grace and are rarely seen without their young babies on their backs.

We were on a high plateau in the centre of Mali, the home of the Dogon people. The sun was setting and after dinner while enjoying the cool mountain air, a boy sat down, spread a white piece of cloth on the ground and began to paint. A true pleasure for me. To paint he needed only a pot, some water and an old, worn brush and within a few minutes hieroglyphic shapes began to emerge on the surface of the cloth.

Mali, en route to Timbuktu I stopped in the city of Mopti to obtain my visa. Every morning there is a covered women ́s market where the local women go to buy fresh fish. As these four women were selecting their fish I was charmed by their brightly colored dresses and individual styles.

After arriving in the town of Segou I went to the harbor and my heart jumped when I saw the local people returning home after a day in the market. Later, as darkness fell I saw shapes, colors and silhouettes that would remain in my memory for ever. Everything was so pretty! But I wondered if I would ever see such a sight again? The women, dressed in long skirts and carrying baskets and tubs loaded with clothes and bananas chatted and laughed as they lifted up their skirts to board the wooden boats that would take them across the river Niger before beginning the walk home.

On the streets of Mali there is time for everything, including moments for leisure, serenity and calm. This is how those men made me feel, sat on the street corner concentrating on their game. I sat next to them for a time without them realizing, observing them. For me it became a magical moment.

I was staying on the edge of the desert in Mali when I decided that I would like to feel the sand beneath my feet Suddenly I began to 55hear voices coming from behind a dune :it was a group of women singing while their children were sitting on the sand spellbound by what they were hearing. What a beautiful image!

Whilst in Mali I loved walking through the local markets and seeing how the young mothers were entertained by them. For me a market is an explosion of colour and movement. One morning I saw a woman leaning on a steel drum, resting a moment: the child she was carrying on her back was sleeping peacefully. I was enchanted by her posture and knew it would make a wonderful painting.

Peul village is the biggest nomad village in the world. When I came across Peul I stopped for a time to watch the farmers and shepherds in their characteristic clothes and hats. Whilst in the village I had the opportunity to experience the distinct smell of their perfumes and cosmetics such as Shea Butter which they also use as sunscreen . In the market I saw three children walking towards me each one enjoying an ice lollipop with a look of joy on their faces.

While their mothers were selling or exchanging goods in the Djennée market in Mali the children were running up and down the street. When they stopped for a rest, two sisters came together in a loving embrace creating an unforgettable image of color and affection.

Whilst sitting on the banks of the Niger river, I was able to discreetly watch how a small group of men washed their belongings and themselves in the water. The scene was fascinating for me as the men had no idea they were being observed and their behavior was both natural and relaxed. Once home I quickly captured my emotions and memories on to canvas.

One evening, in the central plateau region of Mali where the Dogon live, I left my lodgings to wander in the village and appreciate the full moon. There was an unbroken silence and I felt at peace, the only sounds to hear were those of my own footsteps. Suddenly as I passed the wall of a house, a small group of children clambered over the top to see who was disturbing the peace of the night. For me it was an explosion of joy to see them!
